Interview with They Feed at Night
Dear readers, a few weeks earlier I contacted Errol, the from man of the Californian band "They Feed at Night", the interview was ready a long time ago, but because of traveling and not being able to access the Internet for a while it was uploaded now.
Hope you enjoy it.
1. Could you briefly tell us about yourself and your band members?
I (Errol) play guitar and vocals for this project. I recently joined Bell Tower Bats on bass. I’m also a painter. Rikk, who was recruited from the Punk band LA Girlz plays drums. He is also playing in JasonXvoorhees. Ramon plays bass and works in a sex doll factory!
2. When and how did you first become interested in music? How long have you been playing music?
I was exposed to instruments and harder edged music at an early age, so I naturally developed an interest for it. I’ve been playing music regularly a little over 10 years now.
3. How did you meet and what bonded you all together?
Basically, I met Rikk and Ramon through “band members wanted” ads. Rikk was eager to play and extremely dedicated. It’s hard to find people with that same energy. And Ramon was sick in the head as me, so it’s hard to say no!
4. What inspired you to start your band and play in this specific genre?
I wanted to play music that was dark, aggressive, and creative, but wasn’t necessarily generic punk or metal…something stripped down, but still interesting. My intentions weren’t to fit into a genre.
5. Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?
I prefer the old school approach, and the quality to our music is very similar. Starting from the first demo, I would say a wide variety of dark 80‘s, punk, and black metal influenced the tone of our recordings. For the most part, the same direction has been kept since.
6. Who are your favorite musicians? Groups? CD's?
Hmmm “Phantasmagoria” by The Damned and “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” by David Bowie are some obvious classics that never get boring to me. The Cramps, Lords of the New Church, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, 45 Grave, Kettle Cadaver are some favorites.
7. What do you do asides from playing music?
I paint. I would like to get more gallery showings though. I’m planning on making films in the future too. I used to do that before I was a musician actually.
8. What were your best and worst shows?
Best, probably our friend Matt’s (Moribund Rodents) birthday at The Black Flame, or the time we played the last show at Kadan before it closed. Both shows everyone was going nuts…that always makes us less miserable.
Worst, the rest of the shows we’ve played!
9. Have you shared stage with any famous bands?
We’ve played with Rikk Agnew, Stolen Babies, Kommunity FK, Ghoul, God Module, Calabrese. They’re all pretty well known.
10. Could you tell us more about the soon to be released record with Bell Tower Bats?
The record has been in developmental hell for over a year now. We’re finally at the cusp of having it finished. We’ve always talked about doing a split 7’’ record together. TFAN hasn’t released any new material since “DEPRIVATION” in 2013. None of us have had our music pressed on vinyl either, so we’re eager get it out.
11. What brought you together with Bell Tower Bats? Are you friends with them?
I became a fan of BTB after I saw them play. I eventually got in contact with their drummer Grimm. We became good friends since!
12. How do you think the scene has changed in the last 10 years?
I think the internet has changed a lot of things in the scene. It’s more convenient to promote and the amount of bands are endless. However, it’s sad to see the internet effecting the realness of people’s attitudes.
13. What do you think of the current Goth scene?
It’s interesting. There’s people who have been in the scene since it started, and kids who are just getting into it now. The wide variety of different versions of the subculture and sound is pretty insane.
14. Do you have families? How do they react to your activity?
My family accepts it. I actually have family members who have been into this kind of stuff before I was!
